Any type of addon particle I try to use seems to either return an error or doesn't work at all (doesn't show up).

What's the best 1.9 particle addon/line to use?

EDIT: default skript particles don't work either.

Just tried it! It works so damn good, thank you! It just seemed confusing since I was used to "play x particle x amount of times at x place", not "play (insert shape here) at x location etc etc" and I thought it was used for other things.
